Antique Helmet Brass Overlay Plume Holder w/ Small Repair. 18th Century
Wild looking helmet from the estate of a NYC Antiquities and Antiques collector.  Haven't been able to nail down the origin but I was told by the estate it was 18th century or early 19th century.  It was cleaned at some point but the piece still shows it's age. The holes along the rim (to attach a lining I believe) are uneven and appear hand made. the brass is attached with decorative florets and while that appears to have age may have been added at a later date. The most intriguing thing to me is the old repair. You can see the square hole and the patch that was made. The longer neck guard is similar to some Japanese helmets but that's a guess.  I'm including a newer plume/feather for display purposes.
